    July 11: Main accused in Shahbaz Bhatti murder case released on bail
     
    Main accused in Pakistan’s minority leader later Shahbaz Bhatti’s murder case Umer Abdullah was granted bail by Islamabad’s Anti Terror Court (ATC). Shahbaz Bhatti was murdered on March 2, 2011, less than two months after murder of late Governor Punjab Salman Taseer by a security guard in Rawalpindi. The MPA later fled and wasn’t caught despite repeated raids by the police. He finally handed himself over to police on 29th of July and got his statement recorded.

    Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri set off with their ‘Azadi’ and ‘Inquilab’ marches and vowed to bring an end to the government. Imran Khan announced that he would return with PM’s resignation. It took the two marches more than 12 hours to leave Lahore as the crowds marched along with the cars in massive numbers.

    August 14: PM Nawaz inaugurated Quaid-e-Azam’s residency in Ziarat
     
    Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Quaid-e-Azam’s residency in Ziarat. He visited the place along with Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and CM Baluchistan Abdul Malik Baloch. On 15 June 2013, the building had been burnt to ground after militants belonging to Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) fired rockets and grenades at it.
     

     
     
    August 15: PML-N workers stone PTI’s convoy in Gujranwala
     
    PTI convoy was attacked by allegedly PML-N workers in Gujranwala and later at several other places along the long march’s route. While the long march was slowly moving out of the city when at a point near a PML-N MPA’s office, a large number of PML-N supporters started showing shoes to the PTI convoy. Within no instance, the crowd started to throw stones at the cars and it was with much difficulty that the convoy was able to move out of the zone. 4 PTI workers got injured during the collision. The convoy was attacked at more than 5 other places afterwards after which police asked Imran Khan to leave the ‘Azadi’ container and board a car to reach Islamabad and avoid further confrontation.

    August 17: Imran Khan announced Civil Disobedience Movement
     
    In what came as a shock for almost everyone, Chairman PTI Imran Khan announced civil disobedience movement on August 17. He asked the people not to pay their bills and taxes and asked the expatriate Pakistanis to send their remittances through ‘Hundi’ (illegal money transfer) to damage government’s financial strength. However, he retracted from his statement regarding sending of remittances via ‘Hundi’ but the criticism was heavy and continued for several days afterwards.

    August 30: Tear gas shelling on protesters as they attempt to siege Parliament House
     
    PTI and PAT workers moved forward in an attempt to siege PM House, Parliament House, Supreme Court, Pakistan Secretariat and several other important buildings. The police fired tear-gas shells and rubber bullets at the protesters to keep them out. Several protesters got injured in the clashes. Parliament House’s gate was broken by the protesters but the police succeeded in keeping them off the important buildings.

    September 2: Parliament’s joint session started, opposition pledges support to govt

    Joint session of the upper and lower houses (Senate and National Assembly respectively) started on September 2 in what appeared to be government’s resurgence from a deadly turmoil. Opposition parties in the parliament across the board (other than the protesting PTI) announced undaunted support for the democratic system and the government. Senior leaders from PML-N, PPP, JUI-F, MQM, QWP, PK-MAP and ANP made speeches during the joint session and pledged to support government against what they called ‘undemocratic means of PTI and PAT’ to oust the elected government.

    September 3: Javed Hashmi arrived in Parliament, resigned from seat

    Defiant PTI president Javed Hashmi arrived in the parliament, pledged support for the democratic system, criticized the government heavily and announced to resign from his seat in the national assembly on the floor of the house. He was hailed by the members from all the parties on this occasion.

    September 4: PTI legislators attended joint session, pleaded their case

    PTI decided to plead the case inside the parliament as well as all the parties, opposition and ruling, bashed it for standing with the undemocratic forces. Vice Chairman PTI Shah Mehmood Qureshi led his party members to the parliament house, delivered the speech and left along with the parliamentary party. He assured the parliament on this occasion that the PTI was not part of any grand plan to derail the democratic system, as alleged by many.

    Pro-Nawaz and anti-Nawaz slogans were also raised by Pakistani community in the New York outside the General Assembly on this occasion. The political tensions at home seemed followed the prime minister all the way to the US as well.
