Pak Army terms Indian Army chief's statement provocative, regrettable

Dunya News

ISPR says such statements negate ground realities and will vitiate the environment.

RAWALPINDI (Web Desk) – Pakistan has termed Indian Army Chief s claims about violations on the Line of Control as provocative and regrettable.
ISPR‚ in a statement‚ said that Pakistan Army has been respecting the ceasefire on the LoC.

Hours after Indian Army chief Gen Bikram Singh warned against any ceasefire violations on the LoC, the Pakistani military today said such "provocative" statements were counterproductive.

"Such accusation and provocative statements are regrettable and counterproductive," the statement quoted chief military spokesman Maj Gen Asim Bajwa as saying.

The Pakistan Army respects the ceasefire agreement put in place along the Line of Control (LoC) in 2003 "in letter and spirit", it said. "After the meeting between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) on December 24, 2013, the situation along the LoC has improved considerably," it added.

Earlier, Warning Pakistan against border violations, Indian Army Chief Gen. Bikram Singh said India could not be expected to stick to rules if the neighbour was breaking them.

He said that "attempts are on to ensure ceasefire agreements are adhered to by both sides. It is our endeavour to control it, not escalate it".

"If rules are followed by our neighbours, we follow them too. If rules are broken, we won t sit on it, we will break them too," he said.

General Bikram Singh said ceasefire violations have been to aid infiltration of militants from Pakistan.

He also noted that the frequency of ceasefire violations have come down remarkably ever since the meeting of the DGMOs (Directors General Military Operations) of the two countries last December.
