Earlier, the Punjab government directed the police to implement Lahore High Court s order regarding registration of case against all accused including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif in Model Town tragedy.
On Tuesday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) upheld session court’s decision and directed the police to register a murder case against prime accused in connection with the killing of 14 Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) protestors outside the Central Secretariat of Minhajul Quran International in Lahore’s Model Town on June 17.
Inspector General of Punjab Police (IGP) Mushtaq Sukhera confirmed that order regarding FIR registration has been received.
"Sections will be applied in the case as per law," he said.
Important government officials and federal and provincial cabinet members who have been named in this FIR include Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Pervez Rasheed, Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Federal Minister of State for Water and Power Ch Abid Sher Ali and 12 Civil and Police officers. FIR names Gullu Butt among the accused as well. Former DSP Aftab Pehelwaan, 3 former SHOs Rizwan Hashmi, Ishtiaq and Ahmad Majeed are also named in the FIR. Former Law Minister Punjab Rana Sanaullah has also been accused in this FIR.
Earlier talking to media outside the Parliament House, Federal Minister Saad Rafiqe said despite having fundamental right to file an appeal against the judgment of the Lahore High Court registration of FIR against the prime minister and other officials, the government has decided not to go for another appeal, which shows its desire to resolve the issues through peaceful means.
He appealed to Tahirul Qadri not to instigate his supporters as the country cannot afford anarchy. The government is still serious to resolve the political issues through dialogue, he added.
A judicial commission constituted to probe the tragedy had held Punjab government responsible for ‘bloodbath’ in Model Town area.
It was mentioned in the report that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had not ordered the police to ‘disengage’ from the clashes with Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) supporters, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people and injuries to over 80 others.
Punjab Police went to remove the barriers placed outside Dr Tahirul Qadri s residence and Minhajul Quran International (MQI) Secretariat in Model Town. The PAT workers resisted the move which led to a deadly clash.
On the other hand, Anti-Terrorism Court has ordered the arrest of all the people named in the earlier FIR registered for Model Town Incident. Investigative Officer of Faisal Town Police Station has maintained before the special court that according to that FIR, former SHO Shadman Asim Sheikh along with Muhammad Dilawar, Nisar Ahmad, Babar and Ubaid of Elite Force were also named among the accused. The investigative officer informed that these were the police officers found guilty according to his investigation. He requested the special court to issue their arrest warrants.
Issuing the arrest warrants of the police officials named by the investigative officer, court has ordered Police to present them before the court on September 5.
