PPP Chairman emphasises importance of digital media as a weapon during wars
KARACHI (Dunya News) - Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, stated that it was during the recent conflict that the power of digital media was truly recognised as a crucial weapon.
Speaking at a dinner hosted at the Chief Minister's House in Sindh to honour the members of the Federal Executive Committee of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) on their 75th anniversary, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari pointed out that during the war, media outlets from both Pakistan and India were at the forefront globally.
He praised the role of the PFUJ in the ongoing fight for press freedom, recalling how late Benazir Bhutto stood with journalists in their struggles during the movement for democracy (MRD). Despite the challenges, he emphasized that the fight for press freedom continues today.
Bilawal remarked that during the height of Indian aggression, media from both countries were engaged in a battle of narratives, with the Pakistan Air Force responding strongly to India’s provocations. He stressed that misinformation and disinformation had become powerful weapons, particularly used by India during the conflict.
Further commenting on the Kashmir issue, Bilawal said that both neighboring countries often use propaganda to influence public opinion.
He also noted that before the conflict, digital media had been restricted, but after the war, the government recognised its importance and lifted the ban on digital platforms. He reaffirmed PPP’s commitment to freedom of speech and advocated for stronger legislation to protect journalists.
On a positive note, Bilawal announced that in Sindh, 0.21 million homes are being built for flood victims, with a focus on empowering women by granting them ownership rights to these homes.
