Free and fair elections necessary to stop chaos in country

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday holding the election on April 30 was not in line with the constitutional procedure.

Addressing the joint-parliamentary session, he said it did not reflect that the government did not want to hold elections but it wanted free and fair elections at once in the country. “Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said the apex court would intervene if elections were not held, however, it will not intervene but issue an order, he added. The PML-N had started distributing tickets, he said, following the court’s order.

The minister went on to say elections had also been postponed in 1988 too due to floods adding that the government was of the view that the final decision should be taken after thorough deliberation. “Mr Khan wants to ensue chaos in the country”, he added. Free and fair elections, he said, were necessary to stop the chaos.

He said all the state institutions had their own constitutional duties adding that the power invested in them was the parliament’s prerogative. “The parliament has enacted the roles of the institutions and possesses the power to amend those laws”, he added. The nation, he said, was seeking the parliament’s rule on three basic issues and it would help the government address those issues.

He went on to say that the country was grappling with political, constitutional, and administrative crises adding that the crises were not present but being created. “All [the political discourse] culminates at one personality only”, he added. There were diverse opinions, he said, on holding elections.

He alluded that the PTI and its chief Imran Khan had been creating anarchy, mayhem, and crises in the country for the past ten years. “History is witness to the attack on parliament”, he added. Mr Khan never passed a week, he said, without an agitation. Some powerful quarters and the establishment rigged the general election in 2018 which paved Mr Khan’s way to power, he continued.

He alleged that terrorists had been residing in Mr Khan’s residence at Zaman Park and there were petrol bombs, catapults, and stones inside. “DIG Operations was attacked and 65 police personnel were injured as they moved to clear the no-go areas”, he added.

He went on to say that a case was lodged against the perpetrators and 316 persons were arrested and they would be presented before the anti-terrorism court. “The PTI workers attacked Islamabad’s Judicial Complex”, he added. Mr Khan appeared before the Islamabad court, he said, with a plethora of supporters. He questioned why supporters did not come when Mr Khan appeared before the LHC.

He said when Mr Khan had come to power in 2018, PM Shehbaz suggested he strike a charter of the economy but he replied that the then opposition was comprised of thieves and victimised them for the period he stood in power. “He never took action on the ex-NAB chairman Javed Iqbal’s leaked video in his tenure but he enrages on the videos now, he added.

He claimed that Mr Iqbal was brought under influence using the video and ex-assistant to PM used to do a presser daily. “Mr Khan signed an agreement with the IMF but now the lender is pressing the country to fulfil its demands”, he added. He would inflict some accident, Mr Sana said, on the country if the nation did not recognize him.

Mr Sana said Hitler also used to deliver long speeches that affected people’s minds badly. “Had there been no Hitler in Germany, the country would have been leading the world now”, he added.
