Voter registration for overseas Pakistanis begins September 1
Overseas Pakistanis will be given 15 days to register themselves.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Election Commission of Pakistan will start the voter registration process on September 1 for overseas Pakistanis who will be given 15 days register themselves.
Director General Public Relations Nadeem Qasim said overseas Pakistanis possessing valid machine-readable passports can get them registered as voters within the stipulated time.
He said after the due date voter lists will be handed over to the concerned returning officers and names of overseas voters will be scored out. He said such voters cannot cast their vote manually in Pakistan.
Nadeem Qasim said this online voting registration system has been developed with the assistance from the National Database and Registration Authority.
To a question, he said it is a pilot project and overseas Pakistanis can register their votes to exercise their right to franchise in upcoming by-elections across Pakistan. He said over 700,000 overseas Pakistanis will be able to get their vote registered through the newly developed system.
SC permits overseas Pakistanis to vote in by-election
The Supreme Court of Pakistan earlier this month allowed overseas Pakistanis to vote in by-election.
A three-member full bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar conducted hearing over the petitions of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and others.
During the hearing, CJP directed Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure foolproof arrangements with the assistance of National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).
“The election results of iVoting should be kept entirely separate and should be presented in the parliament. In case of dispute, those results will be isolated,” he said.
The Chief Justice also congratulated the overseas Pakistanis following the decision.
