Australia’s Adam Gilchrist holds the record of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a single world cup tournament. Gilchrist dismissed 21 players in 10 matches in the 2003 World Cup. Adam Gilchrist made his Test debut against Pakistan at Brisbane on November 5, 1999. He played 96 Tests and made 5570 runs at an average of 47.06 with 17 centuries and 22 fifties and also dismissed 416 batsmen as a wicketkeeper. Gilchrist also appeared in 287 One-Day Internationals and scored 9619 runs at an average of 35.89 runs per innings with 16 hundreds and 55 fifties. He also held 417 catches and stumped 55 players while keeping.

Adam Gilchrist is the most successful wicketkeeper in the history of world cup. He appeared in three world cups for Australia and dismissed 52 players, including 45 catches and 7 stumping, while keeping the wickets. He dismissed 14 players in 1999 World Cup, 21 in 2003 World Cup and 17 in 2007 World Cup. Gilchrist also holds the unique record of scoring at least 50 runs in successive World Cup finals (in 1999, 2003 and 2007) and is one of only three players to have won three World Cup titles. Gilchrist represented Australia in 96 Tests and 287 ODIs. He announced his retirement from international cricket in March 2008.

Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath claimed 7 wickets for just 15 runs (which is the best bowling figures in World Cup) while Adam Gilchrist took 6 catches behind the stumps. Adam Gilchrist also holds the record of most dismissals during his appearance in World Cups. He took 52 catches in three world cup tournaments.

Glen Mcgrath is a right arm fast medium bowler who played for Australia in 4 World Cups. He holds the joint record with Afridi for most five wicket hauls in World Cup (two). He claimed these hauls against West Indies and Namibia. Against the former, he got the figures of 14-5 as he routed the West Indian batting order which included the prized wicket of Brian Lara. Against Namibia , he took 15-7 which is the current best for any World Cup figures in bowling. He also holds the record for most wickets in World Cups.

The Canadian team could not keep up with the pace of the Sri Lankan bowlers nor could they understand the technique of their spinners.

Kaif was named as the player with the most catches in an innings in any world cup match. He took 4 catches during a game against Sri Lanka in the 2003 world cup. James Franklin of New Zealand holds the distinction of having the highest strike rate in batting in a single innings of a World Cup match. He made 31 runs in just eight ball with a strike rate of 387.50. Franklin made his Test debut against Pakistan at Auckland on May 8, 2001. He played 31 Test and scored 808 runs at an average of 20.71 with 122* as his best score. Franklin also claimed 82 wickets at an average of 33.97. He made his One-Day International debut against Zimbabwe at Taupo on January 2, 2001. He played 110 ODIs and scored 1270 runs at an average of 23.96. In bowling, Franklin captured 81 wickets at an average of 41.40.

Martin Colin Snedden of New Zealand was a left-hand batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler. He made his Test debut against India on February 21, 1981 at Wellington. He played 25 Tests and scored 327 runs at an average of 14.89. In bowling, Snedden claimed 58 wickets at an average of 37.91. He made his One-Day International debut against Australia on November 23, 1980 at Adelaide. Snedden played 93 ODIs and made 535, runs at an average of 15.28 which also included one fifty. He also claimed 114 wickets at an average of 28.39 with 4/34 as his best bowling figures in ODIs.

Nathan Astle of New Zealand holds a strange batting record in the history of World Cup Cricket. He scored 5 ducks in his 22 World Cups appearances and share this record with Pakistan’ Ijaz Ahmad. Nathan Astle was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium fast bowler. He played 81 Tests and scored 4702 at an average of 37.02 with which included 11 centuries and 24 fifties. He also claimed 51 wickets in Tests. Nathan Astle also played 223 One-Day International matches and scored 7090 runs at an average of 34.92 including 16 centuries and 41 fifties. Astle captured 99 wickets in ODIs

Gary Kirsten made his Test debut against Australia in 1993 and made his ODI debut against Australia in the same year. He has been described as a consistent hard working player whose batting capabilities have proven to be invaluable for South African success. Kirsten has played in 185 ODI’s scoring 6798 runs. Gary Kirsten holds the record for highest runs by a player in a single innings in a world cup when he scored 188* against UAE in 1996 world cup. Kirsten retired from international cricket in 2004 and then went onto become cricket coach for India from 2008-2011. From 2011 he was named full time coach for the South African cricket team.

Klusener has scored 372 runs in 14 world cup matches maintaining an average of 124. Klusener also won the player of the tournament award in the 1999 world cup.


David Shepherd

Umpire David Shepherd needs no introduction as he made a record of the most world cup matches umpired. David Shepherd has stood in 92 test matches, 172 ODIs. He also stood as the umpire for 1996, 1999 and 2003 world cup finals. After retiring from county cricket in 1979, Shepherd decided to be an umpire. He made his test debut in 1985 in a match between England and Australia. His last match was between West Indies and Pakistan. Shepherd died in 2009.
