This was the first ever Cricket World Cup. England hosted the event for a reason that it had the resources needed to inaugurate a massive event like this. 6 venues hosted the inaugural cup. Moreover, a total of 16 matches were played in this World Cup in the Lord’s Cricket Ground, The Oval, the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, the Trent Bridge, the Headingley Stadium and the Edgbaston Cricket Ground.


Hot Favorites:

This was the first World Cup to be played which meant there was no reigning champion. Hosts England and visitors West Indies emerged as potential candidates for the World Cup champions.


Debut:

East Africa was the only nation without Test status along with Sri Lanka who featured in the cup.


Semi-finals:

England, Australia, New Zealand and West Indies qualified for the knock out round. Australia defeated England by as many as 4 wickets to face West Indies in the final match of the World Cup 1975 which had defeated New Zealand to qualify for the final.


Final:

The final was played on June 21 1975. There were as many as eight teams that participated. It was called the Prudential Cup because the first installment of the World Cups by the ICC was sponsored by the Prudential Assurance Company. The final was played on June 21 1975 in the Lord’s cricket stadium between West Indies and Australia. Clive Lloyd was the Indies captain who led the country to victory by 17 runs after top scoring with 102 from 85 balls.

World Cup 1979

This World Cup was not much different from the first installment as nothing changed from the format of the game to the host country. England hosted the event and eight teams participated in the event. Sri Lanka and Canada were the only two teams who had qualified for the mega event without having test cricket status.

Semi-finals:

Pakistan faced West Indies in the semi final while the other semi final was played between England and New Zealand. Both the matches were played on June 20, one in Old Trafford Stadium while the other in The Oval cricket ground. West Indies defeated Pakistan in semi-final while England defeated New Zealand.


Final:

The favorite team of the World Cup, West Indies defeated the host team by more than 90 runs in Lord’s Stadium on June 23. Vivian Richard was declared man of the match for his unbeaten 138 .

England was the host of the World Cup third time in a row and had 15 venues each, on which 27 matches were to be played.


Debut:

Zimbabwe played it first ICC World Cup in this editon. It had qualified by the means of 1982 ICC Trophy tournament.


Hot Favorites:

West Indies who were the reigning champions of the last two editions were expected to win this cup as well. Hosts England also posed a formidable threat to the other teams.


Hottest Match:

Zimbabwe defeated Australia which was major upset of the event. Zimbabwe had scored only 239 runs in 60 overs . It was Duncan Fletcher’s all round performance with both bat and ball that turned the game around. A hard hitting 69 and 4 wicket haul got Zimbabwe a narrow win of 13 runs.


Semi-finals:

England, India, Pakistan and West Indies were the teams that faced each other in the semi finals. West Indies defeated India while India defeated the host team to reach in the final.


Final:

The world had expected this to be a one sided game as West Indies team had won the last two World Cups while India even after exhibiting potential through a couple of upsets in the event did not have the fans expecting too much from it. However, West Indies could only score 140 against India’s 183 and thus the World Cup was bagged by India.

Interesting Facts:

• The trophy which was kept in the Indian cricket board headquarters was damaged by the workers of political party Shiv Sena as they pushed into the headquarters in a demonstration of a protest against entry of Pakistan cricket team in India in wake of aggression on Kargil between the two countries.
• This was the last time England was the sole host of the World Cup. After the cup it was decided that the next edition shall be hosted elsewhere and the trophy did not return to English soil till the 1999 edition.

This World Cup is known as the Reliance Cup after the name of its sponsor. This mega event was hosted by Pakistan and India though both the host teams failed to reach the final and got eliminated in the semi finals.

Host teams Pakistan and India entered the tournament with high expectations. India had won the last cup as well which made the defending champion of this cup.


Hottest Match:

The semi final between Australia and Pakistan was played in Gaddafi Stadium Lahore where the Australians managed a tight win. Chasing down 267 , Pakistan was in contention for the cup when its tail was wiped clean by Craig McDermott in a fiery spell.

1987

Semi-finals:

The semi final between Australia and Pakistan was played in Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, Pakistan whereas the other semi final between India and England was played in Wankhede Stadium Bombay, India. Australia and India qualified for the final match which was played at Eden Gardens Kolkata, India.


Final:

Allan Border, Australian captain listed the World Cup 1987 trophy. This marked the first ever win of Australia in World Cups. England, chasing 253 in the final , were overwhelmed by Australians who won by a margin of 7 runs in a match that went to the last over.

Interesting Facts:

• This was the first World Cup which witnessed a change in the number of overs each team played , from 60 to 50.
• This World Cup was the first ever to be played outside England.
• This was the last time a team from sub-continent did not feature in the finals the ICC World Cup.
• This World Cup also witnessed the first ever hat-trick of the mega events. India’s Chetan Sharma has the honour.

World Cup 1992

World Cup 1992

The 1992 WC was the 5th World Cup in cricketing history.
The tournament was held in Australia and New Zealand from February 22 to March 25. Earlier, all the World Cups featured as many as eight teams but this World Cup for the first time had at least nine teams participating in the tournament in one group. This World Cup did not have two groups of teams but all the participating teams played the Robin Round matches. .

Debut:

The World Cup 1992 marked the re-affiliation of South African cricket team with the ICC. South Africa had never participated in the mega event and entered in World Cup 1992 after the end of apartheid in late 1991 as the International Cricket Council (ICC) prepared for the World Cup.


Hot Favorites:

New Zealand became the favourite team for the World Cup after winning all seven matches of the Round Robin. South Africa made an entry to the World Cup with a bang by defeating the pre-tournament favourite Australia in its first match of the Round Robin.


Hottest Match/Semi Final:

In the first semi final, Pakistan knocked out tournament favourites New Zealand, twice in a row in this tournament. Chasing a high total , Inzamam-ul-Haq made a 37 ball 60 in the run chase while Miandad played second fiddle from the other end to achieve the target with one over to go. Inzimam won the Man of the Match award.


Debut:

On March 25, Pakistan faced England in the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne. Pakistan set a reasonable target of 250 for England with the help of Pakistani captain Imran Khan’s 72 after his catch was dropped on 9 and Javed Miandad’s 58. England’s batting line-up was destroyed by Pakistani bowlers that included one of the best bowlers the cricket world has seen, Wasim Akram. He sent an opener back to the pavilion for a duck and soon England was shaking at 69 with losing 4 early wickets. England stabled with Allan Lamb-Neil Fairbrother partnership of 71 runs. Pakistani captain had to use left arm pacer Akram’s second spell earlier then he was supposed to. But this proved to have written the fate of the rest of the match as Akram with two magical deliveries sent the batsmen off the pitch. Pakistan lifted the World Cup 1992 trophy under captaincy of Imran Khan.

Interesting Facts:

• This was the first tournament of the ICC World Cup series to have introduced coloured kits, white balls, black sightscreens for clearer vision and matches played in flood lights.
• The rule about calculating the target score in the matches which were affected by rain was amended for this mega event. A ‘highest scoring overs’ formula was applied to correct the problem with the formula prior to this one.
• The umpiring system was also improved as two umpires were selected from the host teams each (Australia, New Zealand) while one each from the other participating teams making a total of as many as 11 umpires officiating the World Cup 1992. Whereas two more referees were selected separately to supervise the semi finals and the final.
• This was the last time England advanced to semi- final stage of the ICC World Cup , 50 overs format.


1996 World Cup

The 1996 world cup is also known as the Wills World Cup, being named after its sponsors ITC’s Wills brand. It was the sixth international world cup in the cricketing history. 12 teams participated in the 1996 world cup.

Hot Favorites:

Pakistan, India and Australia were seen as the hot favorites while Sri Lanka was cheered on in its home ground.All eyes were mostly fixed on a couple of players who had become stars of cricket. These were Pakistan’s dynamic duo Wasim Akram and Waqar Younas, India’s Sachin Tendulkar and the Australian brothers Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh.


Hottest Match:

The most eagerly anticipated and highly charged match of the whole world cup was the quarter finals between Pakistan and India with India securing a win over its rivals in its home ground in Bangalore.


Debut:

1996 world cup also saw the debut of 3 teams: Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and Kenya. Netherland failed to secure a win its 5 matches. UAE was able to defeat the Netherlands.


Semi-finals:

India, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Australia managed to secure their position in the semi-finals. In the semi-finals between India and Sri Lanka in Kolkata, Sri Lanka managed to score a total of 251 for 8. India however was in bad shape chasing with 120 for 8. At this point, the crowd started to throw bottles in the ground and lit fires in the stand. The game was stopped for 20 minutes however the crowd could not be calmed. Clive Lloyd, referee of the match, declared Sri Lanka as the winner.. In the second semi final in Mohali between Australia and West Indies, Australia scored a total of 207 for 8. West Indies however lost all wickets at 202.

The final held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was between Sri Lanka and Australia. Australia batted first and secured a total of 241 for 7 with Mark Waugh scoring the highest score of 74 in the Australian side. Sri Lanka chased the total in the 47th over. Aravinda de Silva scored 107, the highest from the Sri Lankan side. He was named the Man of the Match.


Man of the Series:

The Man of the tournament was Sanath Jayasuria with a total of 221 runs, a strike of rate of 132 and with 7 wickets to his name.

Interesting Facts:

• The 1996 cricket world cup was held in the Indian sub continent for a second time
• It was the first world cup event to be hosted by Sri Lanka
• The 1996 world cup was marked with considerable controversies. Sri Lanka was going through a civil war with the Tamil Tigers carrying out terrorist activities. The January 1996 Central Bank bombing in Sri Lanka led the Australian and West Indies cricket boards to question the country’s security situation. Both countries decided not to take part in the tournament.
• The ICC declared Sri Lanka as winner of both matches on the basis of forfeit by the two teams. Sri Lanka thus qualified for the quarter finals without playing any match
• The biggest upset came from Kenya which remarkably defeated West Indies.
• Clive Lloyd awarded the semi final between India and Sri Lanka to Sri Lanka due to disruption of the match by the Indian crowd. This was the first ever default recorded in any one day internationals of the game.
• The final was held in the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
• SriLanka became the first Host to win the World Cup


1999 World Cup

The 1999 ICC cricket world cup was the 7th world cup in the cricketing history. The concept of Super Six was introduced for the first time in this tournament. It was hosted by England with some of the games being played in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Netherland.

Hot Favorites:

The matches of the defending champions of the 1996 world cup Sri Lanka were closely followed. The big guns of cricket from each country remained the favorites. Wasim Akram of Pakistan, Sachin Tendulkar from India, Shane Warne and the Waugh brothers from Australia and the previous Man of the Tournament Sanath Jayasuria of Sri Lanka were watched keenly by their fans.
The main highlight of this world cup was the Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar. It was largely believed that Akhtar was the new fastest bowler in Cricket, the title previously held by Jeff Thompson of Australia. Crowds held their breath on each ball of Akhtar, as his bowling speed was captured. Akhtar attempted to bowl the fastest delivery ever.


Hottest Match:

The hottest matches in the tournament were the Super Six matches. The rivalry between India and Pakistan was again highlighted by the match between the two teams. The heatedly contested match was watched by millions. India secured a victory with a total of 227/6 while Pakistan was all out for 180.


Debut:

Bangladesh and Scotland made their debut in the 1999 cricket world cup by qualifying through the 1997 ICC Trophy, while Kenya participated in the event for a second time.


Semi-finals:

Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa progressed to the semi-finals after the intense matches of the super six. The first semi final was played between Pakistan and New Zealand in Old Trafford, Manchester. New Zealand gave a total of 241/7 for Pakistan to chase. Pakistan achieved the target with ease scoring 242 with loss of just one wicket. Shoaib Akhtar was named Man of the Match
The second semifinal was between Australia and South Africa. The match was a nail biter till the end with both teams scoring 213 and the match ended in a draw. Australia progressed to the final as they were higher than South Africa in the super six tables due to a better net run rate. Shane Warne was named Man of the Match.


Final:

The final of 1999 cricket world cup was held in Lord’s, London, England. The final turned out to be a disappointment for the Pakistani fans as Pakistan only managed to score 132 with the whole team out. Australia finished the finals with ease scoring 133 for the loss of just 2 wickets and was named as the champion of the 1999 cricket world cup. Shane Warne was named as Man of the Match.


Man of the Series:

South Africa’s Lance Klusener was named as player of the tournament having taken 17 wickets and a total score of 281. His highest score was 52 not out and a strike rate of 122.17

Interesting Facts:

• The new concept of Super Six was introduced where the qualifier form Group A played qualifiers from Group B and the points earned from these games were carried forward. • Shoaib Akhtar attempted to ball the fastest delivery ever in this world cup.
• Pakistan and India were officially at war during the 1999 world cup match, which further increased the hype of the match.
• A new type of ball called the ‘white duke’ was introduced in this tournament. Alhtough it was said by the makers, British Cricket Balls Ltd, that they were the same as previous ones, they were actually harder and swung more.
• England could not make it to the Super Six stage even though it was the host nation.


2003 World Cup

The 2003 ICC cricket world cup was the 8th world cup event in the cricketing history. This ICC world cup was hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya.

Hot Favorites:

New additions to the world cup squads saw new favorites being followed. Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were seen as India’s top batsmen with their spinner Harbhajan Singh’s bowling greatly admired.
Pakistan’s dynamic duo Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were back in action along with fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar. Pakistani all rounder Shahid Afridi proudly called as ‘boom boom’ Afridi credited with scoring cricket’s fastest half century, was also a favorite among Pakistani fans. Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was a force to be reckoned with.


Hottest Match:

The most watched match apart from the final was again the match between Pakistan and India. Pakistan set a good target of 273/7. It was a close match with India achieving the target in 45.4 overs.


Upsets:

The 2003 ICC cricket world cup was marked with major upsets. The star teams of cricket which included Pakistan, South Africa, England and West Indies were eliminated in the group stage and didn’t even advance to the Super Sixes of the tournament. Kenya, playing in the world cup for the 2nd time advanced to the semi-finals.


Debut:

It was the first World cup event for Namibia. Canada and Netherlands had previously participated in the event in 1979 world cup and the 1996 world cup respectively. All three teams secured their position in the 2003 world cup by qualifying through the 2001 ICC Trophy in Canada.


Semi-finals:

Out of 6, 4 teams i.e. Australia, India, Kenya and Sri Lanka qualified for the semi finals. The first semi final was played between Australia and Sri Lanka. Australia managed to pull a score of 212/7 with some difficulty. Although the target was easy, the Sri Lankan batting order could not handle the fast bowlers of Australia and managed to score only 123/7. Anderw Symonds of Australia was named Man of the Match.
The second semi-final was played between India and Kenya. The experienced Indian team secured a good total of 270/4. Kenya, who was in the world cup only for the second time, managed to score only 179 before the whole team got out. Saurav Ganguly was named Man of the Match


Final:

The final of 2003 ICC cricket world cup was played between India and Australia in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Australian Team batted first securing a healthy total of 359/2 in 50 overs. India hoping its excellent batsmen would be able chase the target, was disappointed as it failed to achieve the target and in the end managed to secure only 234 with the whole team bowled out. Thus Australia held the ICC world cup for the 3rd time. Ricky Ponting was named Man of the Match.


Man of the Series:

Sachin Tendulkar was named Man of the Series having scored 673 runs in the 2003 world cup with an average of 61.18 and a strike rate of 89.25. His best score was 152.

• This was the first world cup to be held in Africa.
• 14 teams participated in this world cup, the largest number in World Cup’s history.
• Australia won the world cup for the third time, most for any nation.
• Lowest score in any world cup or one day international till was 36 by Canada in this tournament (till beaten by Zimbabwe in 2004)
• Longest seventh wicket partnership of 98 runs by Ridley Jacobs and Ramnaresh Sarwan of West Indies.
• Australia scored the highest score in a world cup final
• Australia’s Ricky Ponting scored the highest score by a captain in world cup final
• Australia’s Ricky Ponting created a record of most sixes by a batsman
• Australia won all eleven of their matches in this tournament
• Australia’s Adam Gilchrist made the record of most wicket keeping dismissals in a single world cup
• England did not play their match with Zimbabwe due to political unrest and forfeited.
• Australia’s Glenn McGrath achieved the best bowling figures in a world cup 7/15

2007 World Cup

The 2007 world cup was the 9th event in the tournament’s history. The world cup was hosted by West Indies.

Hot Favorites:

The favorite teams remained Pakistan, India and defending champions Australia. India’s Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh were seen by Indians as favorites. Pakistan’s new players like Imran Nazir and Kamran Akmal were closely followed by fans. Shahid Afridi however remained the hot topic of discussion.


Hottest Match:

The matches of Pakistan and India were closely followed but both teams failed to make an impression and were eliminated in the group stage. The match between Pakistan and Ireland was major upset with Ireland showing their skill in bowling and batting which ultimately resulted in Pakistan’s loss.


Upsets:

There were some major upsets in this tournament with the two biggest names in cricketing history Pakistan and India were eliminated in the group stage. In a major upset Bangladesh beat India while Pakistan lost their match to Ireland. Both underdogs Bangladesh and Ireland advanced to the Super 8’s


Debut:

Ireland and Bermuda made their debuts in the 2007 ICC cricket world cup. It was the 2nd world cup event for Canada and the Netherlands.


Semi-finals:

Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa qualifyed for the semi-finals. The first semi final was played between Sri lanka and New zealand. Sri lanka managed to score a handsome total of 289/5. New Zealand could not handle the Sri Lankan bowling attack and the whole team was bowled out on 208. Jayawardene of Sri Lanka was named Man of the Match.
The second semi-final was played between Australia and South Africa. Australia managed to score only 153/3 which was not a very big target. But the South African side could not handle the pace of Australian bowlers and the whole team was bowled out on 149. Glenn McGrath was named Man of the Match.


Final:

The final was played between Sri Lanka and Australia in Barbados. The match was continuously interrupted by bad weather and then bad light conditions. Australia scored a total of 281/4. As the Sri Lankan players tried to achieve the target, the innings was reduced to 36 overs with target adjusted to 269. Sri Lankan captain was given option of resuming play the next day, but seeing the unachievable target, he chose to finalize the match the same day. Sri Lanka managed to score 215/8 in 36 overs. Australia won the 2007 ICC world cup.

Glenn McGrath was named Man of the Series with a total of 26 wickets in this tournament.

• Due to a misunderstanding, confusion marked the final as umpires said that match was only suspended due to bad light as official announcements and scroeboard declared Australia as winners. It was later found later that they really had won. Umpires Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar were suspended from 20-20 world championship due to this.
• The United States had been very keen to host this world cup in Florida but could not convice the ICC


2011 World Cup

The 2011 ICC world cup was the 10th event in the cricketing world cup history. The tournament was co hosted by Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh. It was the first hosting of world cup matches for Bangladesh

Hot Favorites:

The new world cup saw many new favorites in the world cup. India’s captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was greatly admired by fans. Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kholi were keenly followed by fans. Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi and new fast bowlers Umer Gul and Wahab Riaz. Kamran Akmal’s brother Umer Akmal was seen as a good batsman along with Mohammed Hafiz. Australia’s Brett Lee had a huge fan following internationally.


Hottest Match:

The most talked about and most anticipated match of all tournament was the second semi-final between India and Pakistan. India put together a good total of 260/9. Sachin Tendulkar scored the highest at 85 runs. Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz dominated in the bowling department, taking 5 wickets for 46 runs. Pakistan batting order could not be consistent enough and managed to score 231 before the team was bowled out.


Upsets:

A major upset in this tournament was when Bangaldesh, an underdog team , beat England. Bangladesh scored 227/8. England could not chase the target and the whole team was bowled out at 225. England nonetheless managed to qualify for the quarter finals.


Debut:

Bangladesh and Scotland made their debut in the 1999 cricket world cup by qualifying through the 1997 ICC Trophy, while Kenya participated in the event for a second time.


Semi-finals:

India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka managed to secure a place in the semi-finals. The first semi-final was played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.New Zealand managed a total of 217 before the whole team was bowled out. Sri Lanka chased the target with a score of 220/5. Sri Lanka’s Sangakara was named Man of the Match. The second and the most eagerly awaited semi-final was between the two giants of cricket, Pakistan and India. India batted first and gave a handsome total of 260/9. Pakistan could not chase the target and the whole team was bowled out at 231. Sachin Tendulkar was named Man of the Match.


Final:

The final of ICC 2011 world cup was played between Sri Lanka and India in Mumbai, India. Sangakara, the Sri Lankan captain elected to bat first. It managed to pull a score of 274/6. India’s batting order was in good shape and chased down the total thus making them the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Champions.


Man of the Series:

Yuvraj Singh was named Man of the Series for his excellent over all perfomance with a bowling figure of 5/31.

Interesting Facts:

• Pakistan was also supposed to host this world cup but due to the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team, these matches were then given to India to host
• India became the first country to win a world cup final in its home gorund
• This was the first time in world cup history that both finalists were Asian Team
• Since 1992, this was the first time that Australia was not in the finals.
• Highest team total in this tournament was by India at 370/4.
• Highest individual score in this tournament was by India’s Virender Sehwag at 175
• Kemar Roach of West Indies and Lasith Malinga achieved hat tricks in this tournament.
• Sachin Tendulkar’s catch was dropped 4 times by Pakistani fielders in the semi finals
• In the final Kumar Sangakara’s call for toss could not be heard by the umpire due to the loud crowd noise which has never happened before.
• Bangladeshi fans threw rocks at the West Indies team’s bus mistaking it for the Bangladeshi team.
• Political party Shiv Sena threatened to create disturb the final if Pakistan qualified.
