Sri Lanka v West Indies at The Oval - Jun 13-15, 1979

Sri Lanka , the under dogs who were to achieve test status in 3 years to come , had a fixture against the reigning champions , West Indies in 1979 Prudential Cup. However the match was not to be , as the sky rained cats and dogs for 3 days and both teams got a point. Had the fixture went according to plan , Sri Lanka would have suffered a drubbing from the Mighty Windies who later on won the Cup.

India v Sri Lanka at Mackay - Feb 28, 1992

Sri Lanka was involved in a washed out match yet again when it faced the continental rivals at the qualifying stages of the Benson and Hedges ’92 Cup. Bad weather reduced the match to just 20 overs and when the Indian side which batted first took to the field , bad weather prevailed again after play of two balls.


2nd SF: England v South Africa at Sydney - Mar 22, 1992

The South African fans have bittersweet memories of the ‘92 cup as they were on the receiving end of the infamous ‘rain-rule’. Batting in reply to the English score , they looked set to chase successfully till it started drizzling . When it came out to bat again , the score read ’22 runs off 1 ball required’ . Needless to say , South Africa lost the match.


Sri Lanka v Australia at Colombo (RPS) - Feb 17, 1996

The co-host of the Willis Cup ’96 , Sri Lanka was awarded 2 points without play. Australia forfeited the match due to safety concerns and were not even in Sri Lanka when it was scheduled to start.


Kenya v Zimbabwe at Patna - Feb 26, 1996

Zimbabwe took to the field as it won the toss and elected to bat first. It had 3 batsmen back in pavilion soon and looked struggling when bad weather started to manifest. With no end in sight for the rain , match was abandoned and an ICC ruling had to be given to determine its validity later on.


1st SF: India v Sri Lanka at Kolkata - Mar 13, 1996

1996 India v Sri Lanka at Kolkata

Sri Lanka , the eventual champions of the ’96 Willis Cup met with India at Kolkata for the Semi Final. Setting a high total and following it up with tight bowling , it reduced India to 8 wickets down with a score of 132 required off 15.5 overs. Riots started in the ground and match referee Clive Lloyd called off the match and awarded to Sri Lanka by default. Nobody challenged the decision as the result was written on the wall for India. Sri Lanka went on to win the final and lift the trophy.


3rd Super: New Zealand v Zimbabwe at Leeds - Jun 6-7, 1999

New Zealand dismissed Zimbabwean side for 175 and looked set to chase the target. The English weather proved itself to be treacherous once more and prevented play. The reserve day did not see a single ball bowled as it rained throughout.


Bangladesh v West Indies at Benoni - Feb 18, 2003

The Caribbean side faced off with minnows Bangladesh at the ’03 ICC World Cup. It scored an imposing total of 244 that Bangladesh could not achieve. However , rain intervened on their part ensuring a point to Bangladesh. Before the rain interceded, however , the batting side had lost both openers in quick succession.


Zimbabwe v England at Harare - Feb 13, 2003

Amid security concerns over ongoing political situation , England withdrew from the match and its points went to Zimbabwe. The match ended without a ball bowled.


Kenya v New Zealand at Nairobi (Gym) - Feb 21, 2003

For the same reasons as the above match , New Zealand also forfeited its share. It would pay dearly for the decision later on .


Zimbabwe v Pakistan at Bulawayo - Mar 4, 2003

Pakistani fans will remember this match for yet another reason why Pakistan crashed out of the qualifying stages of the ’03 World Cup at South Africa. The continuous raining meant Pakistan could not secure the points required for qualification.


Sri Lanka v Australia at Colombo (RPS) - Mar 5, 2011

Sri Lanka is on the list of washed out matches yet again , as the only team to be affected by weather in the ICC 2011 World Cup. After a solid start by the openers , Sri Lanka looked set to score high but rain played its hand and the match was called off.
