The incident occurred when an army convoy was en route from Darbuk to Chongtash. A large rock fell on one of the military vehicles, causing it to crash.

Lt Colonel Bhanu Pratap Singh and Lance Daffadar Daljeet Singh died on the spot.

Indian defence officials confirmed the fatalities and said that three other officers—Major Mayank Shubham, Major Amit Dixit, and Captain Garu—sustained serious injuries. All injured personnel have been shifted to the Army Hospital in Leh for treatment.
