Pro-Telangana activists try to storm Indian govt office
Fifty activists of pro-Telangana front PDSU (Progressive Democratic Students Union) were apprehended on Saturday, when they tried to storm the southern Andhra Pradesh secretariat in the state capital Hyderabad. They shouted slogans demanding creation of a separate state. The protesters, including outfit's president Ashok Kumar and secretary Gautam Prasad were taken into detention after they squatted in front of the office's main gate, preventing people from coming in. The federal Home (Interior) Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram had announced on December 09 that the process to carve the Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh, home to several major international companies, would be initiated. But the federal government went back on its promise on December 23 and since then pro-Telangana activists have been agitating. The agitations have resulted in series of violent incidents in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as some other parts of the state. The Telangana region is spread over 10 northern districts of Andhra Pradesh. Political analysts feel that the creation of the new state of Telangana may fuel social unrest and separatist demands in other states.
