At least 14 people were killed when a bus went off a fog-shrouded highway in southern Peru.

LIMA (AFP) - At least 14 people were killed and more than 30 others injured early Sunday when a bus went off a fog-shrouded highway in southern Peru, plunging into a 200-meter (600-foot) deep abyss, police said.

The accident occurred before dawn on the Pan-American highway between the beach resort of Camana and the regional capital, Arequipa, 862 kilometers (535 miles) south of Lima.

"The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to go off the road and into the void," said an official with a police unit that is investigating the cause of the crash.

The injured were taken to a hospital in Camana, while the dead were recovered from the wreckage to be taken to a morgue for identification.
