Hirscher competed the run in 1min 14.52sec, 0.19sec faster than Ligety

SOLDEN, Austria, Oct 26, 2014 (AFP) - Marcel Hirscher of Austria was fastest over the first leg of the opening World Cup giant slalom of the season on Sunday, stealing the thunder of American race favourite Ted Ligety.

Hirscher competed the run in 1min 14.52sec, 0.19sec faster than Ligety with Germany s Fritz Dopfer a further 0.33sec back in third.

The conditions were far from ideal, though, as a sudden rise in the temperature meant that the Rettenbach piste began to deteriorate after the first 10 skiers had completed their run.
