Questions pertained to Toshakhana gifts

LAHORE (Web Desk) – PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz, who recently departed to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, found herself in political hot waters yet again as clips of her interview, wherein she could be heard asking the production team to stop recording some hard questions, went viral on social media.

During an interview to a private show, she could be watched barring the cameraperson from recording when the show host asked her some questions related to Toshakhana gifts she, her father and ex-premiere Nawaz Sharif, and former PM Yusuf Raza Gillani had received during their tenure when they were in power.

The questions came after the Lahore High Court (LHC) had ordered the federal government to publicise details of Toshakhana gifts from 1947 onwards.

The host questioned if Mr Sharif had been gifted a Mercedes by Saudi Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz that was cleared in 2008. “Why was the gift that was received in the 1990s cleared in 2008 even if Toshakhana laws had not allowed cars at that time?” he questioned.

The host claimed that Toshakhana laws were relaxed in 2008 (Yusuf Raza GilLani’s tenure) to benefit Mr Sharif and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

Apart from that, Ms Nawaz also tried to avoid a question regarding a BMW vehicle she had received in 2009-10 and sold in 2011-12.

The questions were responded to by a request from Ms Nawaz to stop the production team from recording and apparently asking her team to share the facts. As the host shared the details, she said she was not aware of the facts.

Earlier, she stick to her guns on Twitter writing that she did not want to say something that was “factually not correct”.
