Nawaz’s disqualification over judgement came on Iqama even intact today: Maryam

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior vice president Maryam Nawaz said on Tuesday parliament should play its role in a bid to hold accountable those who were providing facilities to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

Expressing her reservations over the Supreme Court’s decision, Ms Nawaz said, "It is not enough from the federal cabinet to denounce the verdict delivered by a three-member bench." Going back to 2018, she said, "The responsibility that was taken by Khosa and Saqib Nisar back in 2018, has now been taken by the current bench."

"Today’s verdict is the last attack of the conspiracy, which was started by handing over the Punjab government to Imran Khan after rewriting the constitution," she added.

She went on to say the PML-N leadership had in the past faced the disqualification, adding that the leadership will again bear the disqualification if it happened.

Talking about PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification, Ms Nawaz said, "The PML-N supremo’s disqualification over the judgement that came on iqama was even intact today".

Earlier today, federal cabinet rejected the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s (SCP) verdict directing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold elections in Punjab on May 14.

It comes in response to the decision of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial led three-member bench, comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Muneeb Akhtar, invalidating the ECP’s order of holding off the elections until October 8.

The cabinet shared the stance at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif where it was of the view that the verdict had been issued by a minority-ruled (3-2) bench, sources said. “The decision is inapplicable and has been issued in contravention of the constitution”, sources added.

The cabinet also vowed to, sources said, raise the matter at different forums.
