Govt directed to inform SC over ECNEC decisions about Nai Gaj Dam

Matter regarding dam would be reviewed during a meeting of the ECNEC to be held on January 25.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the government to inform the court regarding decisions taken in a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) over Nai Gaj Dam.

Finance Minister Asad Umar appeared before the top court in case pertaining to Nai Gaj Dam after Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar ordered him to appear before the court.

The minister told the court that the matter regarding dam would be reviewed during a meeting of the ECNEC to be held on January 25.

“The role of CJP Saqib Nisar regarding dam will always be remembered in the history,” he added.

Earlier, during the proceedings, Deputy Attorney General told the court that Asad Umar was attending Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) session over which the top judge said, “We summoned him, he should have come.”

Talking to media after appearance in SC, Asad Umar lauded the passion of CJP for resolving the chronic issue of water storage in the country.

He said the economic indicators in the country are on positive trajectory with exports witnessing an increasing trend while imports are reducing, having a positive impact on the national economy.

The minister said the government will announce its mini-budget on 23rd of this month to take some corrective measures to further improve the economy.

Umer went on to say that the decision regarding awarding Mohmand Dam contract has been Descon company has not yet been taken, adding that Justice Saqib Nisar would definitely be invited on the occasion of the inauguration of the dam.

“Pakistan will soon emerge as a strong economic country,” he said and added the masses should stay satisfied in this regard.

Previously, the CJP said that he wanted to resolve the matter of Nai Gaj Dam in his tenure but some wishes remain unfulfilled.

Responding to the wish of CJP Nisar to conclude the case in his tenure, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan said that we still have one week to complete the hearing.

The federal and provincial governments had expressed disagreement on shared financing of the Rs46.5 billion Nai Gaj Dam and constituted a committee to decrease its cost.
