KP Assembly to elect new CM on Aug 16

Voting will take place at 11am in KP Assembly on Wednesday.

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly would elect the new leader of the house on Thursday (August 16).

This was announced by newly elected KP Assembly Speaker Mushtaq Ghani during the assembly session.

Voting will take place at 11am on Wednesday.

The PTI has nominated Mehmood Khan as their candidate for the slot of chief minister whereas the opposition parties have announced Mian Nisar Gul as their candidate.


Mushtaq Ghani, Mahmood Jan sworn in as KP Assembly speaker, deputy speaker


The assembly on Wednesday elected Mushtaq Ghani and Mahmood Jan as speaker and deputy speaker, respectively.

Mushtaq received 81 votes and against opposition’s Laiq Mohammad who secured 27 votes. Jan clinched 78 votes while opposition’s Jamshed Mohammad got 30 votes.

One hundred and eight out of 112 members of provincial assembly exercised their voting right.


Chief minister


PTI broke silence and announced its candidate for the office of chief minister on August 8. Out of the blue the name of Mehmood Khan surfaced for this crucial post.Till the last moment, Atif Khan was the most favourite one.

Mehmood Khan was born in Matta Tehsil of Swat in 1972. He got early education from Government Primary School Matt and then obtained certificate of Matriculation from Peshawar Public School.

He did his masters from Agriculture University of Peshawar.

From 2007 to 2012, he had been Nazim Union Council Khariri of Tehsil Matta. He is a prominent politician from Swat who elected as MPA on PK 8 in 2013. He held portfolios of sports, culture, and irrigation in the cabinet of Pervez Khattak.

He was KP irrigation and home minister but for a very brief period of time. In general election 2018, he bagged 25,697 votes from PK 8. He is the president of PTI Malakand Division.
