Met Office issues flood warning for monsoon

PMD warned about frequent rains during in the northern areas and flood threat in KP, GB

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert of floods during monsoon due to frequent rains in the northern areas.

The Met Office said prolonged rains in the upper regions of the country could result in devastating floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit Baltistan (GB). PMD has warned of the floods in these areas and asked the relevant authorities to take precautionary measures.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has hosted a conference for monsoon, named "National Monsoon Preparedness Conference 2017", for this purpose where representatives of the Met Office were also present. PMD warned that there will be an alarming number of rainfalls in monsoon. The floods could also enter in the big cities and cause damage.

Also, PMD officials issued an alert about the rising temperature in KP and GB. The heavy rains will pose a threat to the lakes in which storms could erupt. The land-sliding will also occur in mountain ranges which can cause damage to life and property.

The conference was chaired by NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Omar Mahmood Hayat. It was aimed at reviewing preparatory efforts at Federal and Provincial level for impending Monsoon Season to departmental plans with respect to flood fighting, rescue and post flood rehabilitation.

PMD has forecasted normal rainfall in the month of July while less than normal rain falls in the months of August and September.

Some heavy downpour events may produce Urban Flooding in big cities. In the conference, it was highlighted that the monsoon season would present threat of riverine floods, flash floods, urban flooding and glacier lake outburst floods.
