QUETTA (Dunya News) – Panic broke out in Zhob when accidental firing by a policeman at the private residence of Balochistan Governor Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail left five people injured on Friday.
According to police, the incident occurred outside the governor’s residence, Janan House, when a policeman’s rifle went off by mistake. Three students who had come to meet the governor and two policemen on duty were hit by bullets.
Officials said the injured students belong to Government Boys Degree College Zhob. They were rushed to Zhob Civil Hospital, where doctors confirmed their condition as stable.
District Police Chief SP Shaukat Mohmand explained that the mishap happened due to an accidental burst. SHO Muhammad Ayub Mandokhail added that the policeman was trying to clear a bullet stuck in the rifle chamber when his finger accidentally pressed the trigger.
Since the weapon was on burst mode, several bullets were fired, but as the gun was pointed towards the ground, major damage was avoided. He noted, “Even I and the DSP narrowly escaped the shots.”
At the time of the firing, more than 100 students from the Government Degree College Zhob were gathered at the governor’s residence to meet him.
Dr Abdul Rehman, the hospital’s medical superintendent, said surgeries on the injured students had been completed successfully and their condition was out of danger. The two policemen sustained minor injuries and were discharged after first aid.
Governor Jaffar Mandokhail expressed deep sorrow over the incident, visited the injured students at the hospital, and announced that he would bear the full cost of their treatment. He assured them of all possible educational and financial support.
The governor also ordered strict training and regular checking of security weapons to prevent such incidents in the future.
