ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Opposition parties on Monday staged a walkout from the Lower House of the Parliament in protest against prolonged power outages across the country, Dunya News reported.

Talking to media outside the Parliament, Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah said increased load shedding has claimed scores of lives.

He was referring to deaths of 157 people due to intense heatwave in most parts Sindh.

The high temperatures were made worse by frequent power outages, sparking protests in several parts of Karachi. Electricity cuts also crippled the city’s water supply system, hampering the pumping of millions of gallons of water to consumers.

The federal government and K-Electric, the private company that supplies Karachi with power, had promised there would be no outages during the time of Sehar and Iftar.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Vice Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said 150 people have lost their lives due to heatwave for the first time in Pakistan’s history.

Rasheed Godil of MQM remarked that no one is addressing sufferings of the masses.

“If a complaint is lodges, they reply that K-Electric has been privatized,” he added.

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed advised Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to divert all development funds to electricity projects.

Earlier during the NA session, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) members raised placards, demanding the government to end load shedding at earliest.
