Of rip offs: That time fashion brand Zara sold expensive 'lungis'

(Web Desk) – Fashion brand Zara has become the centre of mock and ridicule on social media following the launch of its ‘check mini skirt’ for women which has some unbelievably striking resemblance to the lungi – a traditional garment worn largely by Asian men.
The loose-fit garment – lungi – is a tube shaped piece of breathable fabric that is wrapped around the waist and tied either at the front or on the side. It is usually worn by men in warm climate regions, including not just Asia but also some parts of Africa and the Arab world.
Also called Sarong in some parts, the lungi has traditionally been considered a very casual garment with men wearing it informally. It often comes in chequered patterns.
But that’s not all. Not just the fact that it looks exactly like a lungi, the ‘check mini skirt’ is also being criticised for the price at which the fashion label is selling it for – £69 or $98, reported the BBC.

According to the Hindustan times, an online retailer – The Lungi Wala is offering a similar check lungi for Indian Rs. 357, equivalent to almost $6. No brownie points for doing the math to calculate the price difference between a traditional lungi and that being offered by Zara.
Zara pitches it ‘check mini skirt’ as having a ‘draped detail in the front’ with a ‘front slit detail at the hem’. And there’s also a zip. It is made of polyester and viscose.
But Twitteratis, espeically in India, have not spared Zara. From mocking at the resemblance of Zara’s product for women with that of a traditional lungi worn by men, to the steep price set at which it is being sold, people have been critical of the fashion label’s latest gem. Certain segments have also taken to sharply criticise over the fact that Zara is now selling the skirt without any recognition of the region it originates from.
