Aamir Khan's Dangal smashes records in China

Dunya News

Dangal is all set to unseat Japan's Your Name as the highest grossing non-Hollywood.

(Web Desk) - Since its release on 5th May in China, the wrestling drama has amassed mammoth 487mln yuan ($70.7m; £54.5m) at the box office and continues to look strong, reported state run news agency Xinhua. With these collections, Aamir-starrer Dangal has surpassed Prabhas-starrer Bahubali to become highest grossing Bollywood movie at the world-wide box office.

Furthermore, Dangal is all set to unseat Japan s Your Name as the highest grossing non-Hollywood film ever in China, thanks to China’s mounting interest in Hindi cinema and Amir’s efficacious marketing campaign. Dangal has already completely overshadowed Hollywood Guardians of the Galaxy at China’s box office.

Dangal was released as Shuai Jiao Baba, which translates as ‘Let s Wrestle Dad’ in Chinese. Aamir Khan became sensation in China since his 2009 release, PK, a movie that earned lot of fame and money to Mr. Perfectionist in the Chinese market.

Dangal is not typical song-and-dance type Bollywood melodrama. The movie is inspired from the real life incidents of an Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who defied social taboos and trained his daughters to pursue wrestling as a career in an extremely conservative society. The movie also sheds light on deep rooted social issues of gender inequality and child marriage abuse.
