Kremlin says calls to fire US envoy Steve Whitkoff undermine Ukraine peace talks, describing leaked transcripts controversy as routine negotiation activity and an attempt to derail progress.
MOSCOW (Shahid Ghuman) – Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that calls for the dismissal of US President’s envoy Steve Whitkoff, who is engaged in talks on the Ukraine peace process, are an attempt to sabotage ongoing peace efforts.
The demands emerged after leaked transcripts allegedly revealed conversations between Whitkoff and Yuri Ushakov, aide to the Russian President.
Peskov stated that there is nothing particularly alarming in the matter and noted that President Trump had recently, albeit indirectly, defended Whitkoff. He added that it is the negotiator’s job to discuss various aspects of an issue.
According to the Kremlin spokesperson, the demands for Whitkoff’s removal are essentially aimed at undermining progress made so far in the peace process, adding that many actors appear uncomfortable with any genuine advancement toward peace.
