NATO to decide on Afghan power transition in March, Rasmussen

Dunya News

NATO aims to transfer increased powers to the Afghan government in the next few months if there is a stable political environment, the organization's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday in Brussels.General Rasmussen said that we do not have a date set yet for the start of the transition process but I am planning to take a decision during the months of February and March. It all depends, as you have mentioned, on the conditions of the terrain, Rasmussen told reporters. He said the transition could only be successful if an Afghan parliament was in place first. More than four months since a general election was marred by widespread fraud, Afghanistan's parliament has yet to convene, while the other hand Afghan President Hamid Karzai has announced to inaugurate the Afghan Parliament on 26 January.
