WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S.-Israeli relationship needs to return to "constructive footing," according to a prominent Jewish leader who spoke to the ex-secretary of state.

Clinton, a possible Democratic presidential contender in 2016, said the U.S. and Israel need to get back to shared concerns and interests, including a negotiated two-state solution, according to the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

Clinton spoke Sunday with Malcolm Hoenlein, the group s executive vice chairman. He says in the statement Clinton told him that the U.S. must ensure that Israel "never becomes a partisan issue."

A Clinton spokesman confirmed that the two spoke by phone on Sunday but did not elaborate.
