Guyana girl killed by small plane propeller

Aviation Minister Robeson Benn says officials don't know how the collision occurred.
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) - A 17-year-old girl has died after she was struck by the propeller of a small airplane on a jungle airstrip in the South American country of Guyana.
Aviation Minister Robeson Benn says officials don t know how the collision occurred at the Ekereku airstrip, one of Guyana s many lightly monitored rural airstrips.
Civil aviation investigators traveled Thursday to the remote gold mining community near the border with Venezuela to investigate Wednesday s death. Police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker identified the victim as Raquel Joseph.
Two years ago, a motorcyclist was killed at a nearby airstrip when he rode into the path of a small plane. People often use such airstrips for soccer, cricket and other activities because airplanes don t land there regularly.
