North Korean govt compels parents to give patriotic names to kids

(Web Desk) - North Korea insists parents give their children names like “bomb,” “gun,” “satellite,” or other similarly “patriotic” words, as the dictatorship cracks down on the use of kinder, more encouraging names.

Before, Pyongyang permitted people to use names that resembled those of South Korea, such as A Ri (loved one) and Su Mi (super beauty).

But today, if a person’s name isn’t “revolutionary” enough, the nation is forcing them to change it, along with the names of their children, to ones that are more ideological and martial.

They’re urging people to give their kids names that end in a consonant, and they’re threatening to punish those who don’t. Names like Chong IL (gun), Chung Sim (loyalty), Pok IL (bomb), and Ui Song (satellite) are appropriate.

‘Residents are protesting that the authorities are forcing people to change their names in accordance with the criteria demanded by the state,’ a person who spoke to RFA on condition of anonymity said.

‘Since last month, reminders to fix all names without final consonants have been regularly given out at the neighborhood-watch unit’s residents’ meetings.

People without final consonants have till the end of the year to give their names political connotations in order to adhere to revolutionary norms.

Many parents are upset about the decision and are hesitant to implement it. The insider continued to speculate as to whether the authorities were endorsing the rule to ensure that names accurately reflect the “current era of poverty and persecution.”

Residents have been reminded by officials that names should not be fashionable in South Korea.

The regime characterises the trends as a rip-off of the wealthy Western Yankee culture.

Authorities criticised several generations of families for giving their children South Korean, Chinese, and Japanese names rather than North Korean ones.

Residents secretly make jokes about adopting dated names like Yong Chol, Sun Hui, or Man Bok. These are just as outdated as Eustace, Gladys, or Mildred.

According to the source, locals are enraged by the oppression of the government which enforces collectivism.

They also questioned why people cannot be allowed to give themselves names, asking if they are mechanical parts or cattle.
