World's First SMS Sells For Over $100,000
(Reuters) - The first SMS message ever sent has sold for $121,000 as a Non-Fungible Token at an auction in Paris.
The text message which simply said, “Merry Christmas,” was sent Dec. 3, 1992, on the Vodafone network. The message was sent by Vodafone engineer Neil Papworth and received by employee Richard Jarvis.
The text was put up for auction by Vodafone, with the proceeds going to the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR. The selling of intangible goods is not legal in France, so the text message has been packaged into a digital frame. The buyer will also receive a replica of the original communication protocol that transmitted the SMS.
