Pastor and monk form rock band
Assuming monks can’t rock out would be wrong.
(Web Desk) - A monk and a pastor have joined forces, forming a rock band called Boxi in order to spread the word to the younger generation.
Based in Japan, pastor Kazuhiro Sekino and a group of six monks – who take it in turns on stage – play sweaty gigs and crowd-surf in order to take their message to teenagers.
‘Most religious workers have to go into the secular world and communicate with young people, make them happy through music,’ Sekino says.
‘Otherwise the important messages won’t reach them.’
One of the monks, Yoshinobu Fujioka, said assuming monks can’t rock out would be wrong.
‘It’s an incorrect stereotype that monks have to be quiet all the time. We look calm but we also have to pay attention to our dynamic instincts. They’re just different forms of zen,’ he said.
The band began playing to small crowds three months ago but hope to get a bigger following through their music. Their unusual line-up will probably help too…
