Researchers find out a medicine which could be used to treat Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes.
There is good news for Type 2 diabetic patients. It has been reported that a medicine has been found by researchers which could be used to treat Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes in older people. The findings of the researchers have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was conducted at the Joslin Diabetes Center. It shows that enzyme, Sirt3, found in the mitochondria reduces, in quantity, in the skeletal muscles of those with diabetes. Sirt3 is the power producers of cells that convert energy into usable forms. It is believed that the findings will help in discovering medicine to boost the activity of enzymes. Enzyme thus boosted would pave way for the development of insulin resistance. The senior author of the study, C. Ronald Kahn said, “Ours is perhaps the first study to understand what is going wrong in the mitochondria of those with diabetes. Many studies have shown that the mitochondria don’t work well in those with diabetes. This points to a cause of why they don’t work well”.Meanwhile, a study has revealed that a diabetic patient is least benefited with diabetes-fighting drug metformin, and exercise. Although both have been found of reducing sugar levels, taken in combination has not helped in improving the condition of diabetics.
