England rout San Marino 5-0 in Euros qualifying

England beat San Marino 5-0 in 2016 European Championship qualifier at Wembley Stadium on Thursday.

LONDON (AP) - England inflicted San Marino s 60th consecutive loss, routing world football s weakest team 5-0 after a sluggish start in the 2016 European Championship qualifier at Wembley Stadium on Thursday.

Wayne Rooney scored his 42nd international goal from the penalty spot to go within seven of England s all-time top-scorer, Bobby Charlton, but wasted several chances to close the gap further.

San Marino, which is joint bottom of FIFA s rankings with Bhutan, prevented England from scoring until the 24th minute through Phil Jagielka s header in a first-half when the 18th-ranked hosts lacked tempo.

After Rooney s strike before halftime of the Group E match, Danny Welbeck and Andros Townsend netted after the break and Alessandro Della Valle scored an own goal.

Meanwhile, Slovakia stunned Spain 2-1 in European Championship qualifying on Thursday, breaking the run of 14 straight away wins for the titleholder.

It was Spain s first away loss in qualifying for the European Championship and the World Cup since 2006.

Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas let the opener by him in the 17th minute when he failed to punch out Juraj Kucka s free kick.

Paco Alcacer leveled for Spain in the 82nd, but fellow substitute Miroslav Stoch headed a cross past Casillas in the 87th with Spain caught looking for the winner.

Slovakia took the lead of Group C.
