IOC to meet India officials over Olympic ban

Dunya News

Meeting intends to resolve the issue of government interference in body’s affairs.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - The IOC will meet officials from India on May 7 seeking progress to end the country s suspension from the Olympic movement because of government interference in elections.

The International Olympic Committee says the meeting is intended "to agree on an action plan and a roadmap, with clear deadlines" for resolving India s issues.

The two sides could not agree a planned mid-April meeting in Lausanne.

India was suspended in December after holding unrecognized elections and retaining officials implicated in corruption linked to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

The IOC says in a statement it requires "free, fair, democratic and transparent elections within the (Indian Olympic Association)."

While suspended, countries cannot receive IOC funds, officials are barred from Olympic business and athletes compete only under the Olympic flag.
