Summary Iranian delegation departs Islamabad after 21-hour high-level talks involving US and Iran end without agreement, with Pakistani leadership facilitating the diplomatic engagement.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The capital city of Pakistan witnessed the departure of the Iranian delegation on Sunday following an extensive round of high-level diplomatic discussions involving Iran and the United States, which were hosted and facilitated with Pakistan playing a key mediating role.

The visiting delegation was seen off at the conclusion of their engagements by Pakistan’s senior leadership, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

The Iranian side was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The meetings, which lasted nearly 21 hours, concluded without the signing of any formal agreement, despite what officials described as detailed and structured exchanges.

The engagement highlighted the active role played by Pakistan in facilitating dialogue between the two sides following a recently brokered ceasefire. Iranian representatives acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in hosting and enabling the negotiations, with messages of appreciation extended to both the leadership and the public.

Islamabad talks

The departure took place shortly after the conclusion of talks that covered a wide range of regional and strategic issues, reflecting the intensity of discussions held over more than 20 hours.

The discussions between the United States and Iran, held over the weekend in Islamabad, focused on critical security, nuclear, and regional stability concerns.

Despite the extended duration of talks, both sides were unable to reach consensus, with each attributing the outcome to fundamental differences in positions.

US delegation leaves after inconclusive talks with Iran in Pakistan

The US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, stated that Washington’s terms had been rejected, while Iranian representatives described the proposals as lacking credibility and failing to secure trust.

The Iranian Parliament Speaker noted that Tehran had entered the negotiations without confidence in the opposing side, citing past conflicts and unresolved tensions.

US officials maintained that their negotiating framework included clear conditions on nuclear and missile issues, sanctions relief, and regional security arrangements. Iranian proposals, meanwhile, reportedly emphasised sanctions removal, greater control over strategic waterways, and revised transit arrangements. Both sides acknowledged that no agreement had been expected from a single round of talks, with further engagement not ruled out.

Iranian Speaker Ghalibaf says US failed to build trust, commends Pakistan's role in talks

Iranian representatives reiterated their commitment to defending national interests and continuing diplomatic efforts, while also recognising Pakistan’s role in bringing the parties together for dialogue.

The talks were held against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions following months of conflict that led to significant casualties and instability. A ceasefire earlier in April created space for renewed diplomatic engagement, with Islamabad emerging as a central venue for indirect dialogue between the two sides.
