Adiala Jail deputy superintendent held on the charges of misusing his powers
RAWALPINDI – Former Adiala Jail deputy superintendent Muhammad Akram was taken into custody for allegedly facilitating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan in the prison.
The arrest of Akram, who was removed from his post on June 20 for allegedly acting as a communication link between the former premier and his aides, has led to busting of a network.
Following the arrest, security agencies have started interrogating two officers, who been identified as Adiala Jail assistant Nazim and ex-deputy superintendent Zafar. The accommodation of the both officer was also located near the residence of Akram.
Sources said six more officials of the jail will also be interrogated in light of the revelations made by Akram during interrogation. They include three wardens, two head wardens and two other officials. All these were close aide of Akram in the jail where the former prime minister was also provided a mobile phone.
The security agencies informed the Inspector General of Prisons about the situation, and he had already been removed from his position.
The agencies are investigating the deputy superintendent Muhammad Akram, and departmental action will be taken following the probe.
Sources said the investigators had also found evidence of mobile phone used for WhatsApp messages.
Akram is also considered close to PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari and a former provincial minister of Punjab. He is facing charges of acting as a communication link and facilitator in the jail.
The PTI founder has been detained for over a year on various charges, including the Toshakhana case, and cipher case. His wife, Bushra Bibi, has also been imprisoned for several months.
