(Web Desk) – The United States House of Representatives voted on Wednesday for an independent investigation into claims of election manipulation in Pakistan following the Feb 8 national elections, stressing the importance of democratic participation.

The US House voted 368-7 for a resolution calling for a “full and independent investigation of claims of interference or irregularities in Pakistan’s February 2024 election.”

The resolution condemned efforts to suppress Pakistanis’ participation in their democracy through harassment, intimidation, violence, or other violations of their rights.

It expressed support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan and urged the government to respect democratic processes, human rights, and the rule of law.

Pakistan's recent general elections were troubled by an internet shutdown on election day, arrests, violence, and delayed results, leading to accusations of rigging.

The issue was prominently raised by former prime minister Imran Khan's party, PTI, whose leaders had to run as independents after losing their party symbol due to a legal dispute.

Most of PTI's leadership, including Imran Khan, faced legal charges during the elections, though their candidates still became the largest group in the National Assembly.
