ECP hears PTI's plea seeking disqualification of Yousaf Raza Gillani

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday has conducted hearing on a plea seeking disqualification of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Yousaf Raza Gillani as a senator.

A four-member bench headed by Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi heard the matter during which, central deputy secretary-general of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Farrukh Habib and member of National Assembly (MNA) Maleeka Bukhari appeared.

The PTI has filed a new plea making its two members of provincial assembly, who were shown in the leaked videos, as parties in the case.

Subsequently, the commission has sought reply from the PPP leader and adjourned the hearing till April 5.

Previously, notices were issued to Yousaf Raza Gillani, his son Ali Haider Gillani and other parties regarding the leaked video.
ECP had rejected the plea of PTI to stop the notification of Yousaf Raza Gillani’s victory in the Senate elections.

Maleeka Ali Bukhari read the transcript of former premier’s son Ali Haider Gillani’s leaked video and claimed that the procedure of wasting the vote was being taught in the clip.

The ECP Punjab member asked why the MNAs met Ali Haider Gillani when they clearly knew about horse trading trend in the elections over which, PTI lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar told that the video was recorded to expose the corrupt elements in politics.

It is to be mentioned here that Yousaf Raza Gillani had defeated PTI candidate Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in an upset victory in the Senate elections.

The contest between Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Yousaf Raza Gillani was being described as the most critical contest among the opposition and the government.

Yousaf Raza Gillani secured 169 votes while Abdul Hafeez Shaikh grabbed 164 votes. A total of 7 votes were rejected by the ECP.
