Benazir murder case: SC rejects PPP's plea to suspend bail of accused policemen

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday has rejected Pakistan Peoples Party s (PPP) petition to suspend bails granted to two police officers accused in the Benazir murder case involving ex-President Pervaiz Musharraf as principal accused.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the case and upheld the Lahore High Court’s verdict rejecting the petition seeking suspension of the bail of former SP Khurram Shahzad and City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto also attended today’s proceedings, While talking to media outside the court, Bilawal said he intends to become a party in the case.

It is pertinent to mention here that former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack during an election rally at Liaqat Bagh in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007.

Earlier, an Anti Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi had announced a guilty verdict against Saud Aziz and Khurram Shehzad handing down 17- year jail imprisonment each to the convicts.

Five other accused were acquitted in the case. It is important to note that the court had declared main accused Pervaiz Musharraf proclaimed offender in the case.
