What is parole - How long can Sharifs stay over the special grant?

Former Premier Nawaz Sharif can stay as long as the home department grant the extension to him.

(WebDesk) - Parole is conditional freedom for a prison inmate on which former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar have been released from Adiala Jail in the wee hours of Wednesday to attend funeral of Begun Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of Nawaz Sharif, who died in London on Tuesday.

Parole is a temporary release of a prisoner who agrees to certain conditions before the completion of the maximum sentence period. The prisoner (called a "parolee") gets out from behind bars, but has to live up to a series of responsibilities. Under parole as most people think of it—sometimes called "discretionary" parole—an inmate gets out of prison early and serves some part of the remaining sentence under parole supervision.

Under the traditional parole system, parole is a privilege for prisoners who seem capable of reintegrating into society. Authorities retain the discretion to deny parole to prisoners they deem dangerous. According to the Law, the parole can be granted to any prisoner. The Punjab Prison rules 1978 in this regard says;


According to Punjab Prison Rules 1978. Rule 545-B said that the duration of permission to attend Funeral “may” not “ordinarily” exceed 12 hours, “Depending on the circumstances of Each Case”.

Former PM Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani had also been granted the parole for three days when his mother died he was released from Adiala Jail for three days on parole.


Former President Asif Ali Zardari was arrested in November 1996 after PPP Govt was toppled by the then President Farooq Laghari. After 6 years in November 2002, he was released on Parole to visit his mother Bilqees Begum on death-bed & perform her funeral rituals.


It is likely that parole for PMLN Supremo, Maryam Nawaz and Capt. Safdar will be extended till the ‘Qul’’ rites of former first lady. It is only right and just that Prime Minister Imran Khan has authorized the Pakistan High Commission in London to assist the Sharif family in any way possible following the news of the former First Lady’s passing.


Released on the parole, former Premier Nawaz Sharif can stay as long as the home department grant the extension to him depending upon the situation of the Kulsoom Nawaz’s body arrival from London and subsequently the final rituals to lay her to rest, said the legal experts.


Prime Minister Imran Khan has authorised the Pakistan High Commission in London to assist the Sharif family in any way possible following the news of the passing of former first lady, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

On the other side, news analyst Khawar Ghumman opined this matter is relatively grave and should not be observed from political angle. Action taken by the government is positive. Some stakeholders are trying to make it a political issue which should be avoided keeping in view its sensitivity. He went on to say if the matter is considered legally, it definitely take some time.

Late night on Tuesday, the president of PMLN and brother to the PMLN Supremo Nawaz Sharif had written to the government to release them on parole for five days. Punjab Govt accorded 12-hours for the day of funeral subject to conditions.



The Sharif family was earlier released from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail on 12-hours parole hours after the demise of former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz in a London hospital. They were escorted by police to the Nur Khan airbase from where they were taken to their family residence, Jati Umra in Lahore.

Residence of Sharif family in Jati Umra has been declared sub-jail following their arrival. The funeral prayer of Kulsoom will be offered on Thursday in London’s Regent Park mosque.

PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and other family members have flown to London to attend the funeral and bring Kulsoom’s body back to Pakistan. The body of Kulsoom Nawaz will be brought to Lahore for her funeral prayers which will be held on Friday and she will be buried alongside her father-in-law, Mian Sharif, at Jati Umra.

In the last 15 months of her life -  when she was battling with cancer on her death bed, she became victim of a maligned hatred campaign of manufactured conspiracies and tailored accusations against her severe ailment. Her Husband, fomer Premier and PMLN Supremo and leadership was sternly disparaged with the allegations for using her illness to garner sympathy and political gains.
