UK parliament confers inaugural Speaker's Democracy Award on Marvi Memon

House of Commons has recognised Memon's work as chairperson of BISP
(Web Desk) – Inaugural Speaker s Democracy Award has been conferred on lawmaker of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Marvi Memon on Thursday by the United Kingdom House of Commons.
Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow MP announced the recognition in a session convened today.
Press release of the quoted Speaker Bercow: “I am pleased to be able to tell the House that Marvi Memon MP is the winner in this, the inaugural year of the Award.” Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme and minister of state, Memon declared the recognition an honour of Pakistan.

Speaker Bercow had further said: “I announced to the House the launch of a new initiative, the Speaker’s Democracy Award. The intention of this award is to allow this House to recognise and celebrate individuals who have championed democracy, or brought about social change in an emerging democracy.”
Speaker of the House of Commons lauded Marvi Memon’s efforts and said: “Ms Memon has fronted a substantial and impressive programme of empowerment through her BISP work, by giving over 5.3 million of the poorest women a modest stipend for essentials such as food, clothing, healthcare and education.”
In another post on Twitter, Marvi stated that it would not have been possible without the ‘unflinching’ support of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Finance Minister.
