Decisions are taken in capitals not in embassies: Husain Haqqani
Hussain Haqqani appeared in 'Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath' show.
KARACHI (Dunya News) - Pakistan’s former ambassador to United States Husain Haqqani is in hot water after he confessed to acting as facilitator in stationing American intelligence officers and troops on Pakistani soil that eventually led to hunt Al-Qaeda’s chief Osama bin Laden down in Abbottabad’s compund.
Haqqani, in an article published in the Washington Post, narrated that Pakistan’s embassy in USA during Zardari’s tenure had issued thousands of visas to American spies in this regard.
Haqqani narrated that Zardari-led Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) regime was aware of all developments while Islamabad was ‘officially kept out of loop’.
Haqqani’s startling revelations have caused stir in Pakistan’s political scenario where PPP seems on back foot.
Another former PPP’s envoy to Washington, Shireen Rehman have utterly dispelled Haqqani’s claims.
Haqqani, on Monday, appeared in Pakistan’s renowned and widely watched show ‘Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath’ to portray other side of the picture.
Haqqani said he had stated following facts in his article. First, Pakistan was ‘officially kept out of the loop’ in Osama-related intelligence operation. Second, Americans do not trust Pakistani intelligence and military officials. Third, Americans had stationed their intelligence and special troops in Pakistan who played vital role in tracing and hunting Bin Laden down.
Haqqani said he had never stated that troops were deployed through assistance of PPP’s regime.
Haqqani posed a question that if Pakistani intelligence agencies were so incompetent that they were not aware of Bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad or they could not trace stationing of Americans intelligence agents on Pakistani ground without their consent. Haqqani called for an end to blame game.
Haqqani said PPP received mammoth $7.5 billion aid from Obama’s administration during five-year tenure.
It is useless to hurl allegations on ambassadors because such major decisions are taken in capitals, not in embassies. PPP is using me as scapegoat, he added.
