SHC orders to seal illegal liquor stores in Karachi
SHC heard a petition against shifting of a liquor shop from Korangi area to North Karachi Township.
KARACHI (Dunya News) - The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday ordered to seal all the liquor shops operating without license in the province with immediate effect.
A two-judge bench, headed by SHC chief justice Sajjad Ali Shah, passed this direction while hearing a petition against shifting of a liquor shop from Karachi‘s Korangi area to North Karachi Township.
The bench had directed the excise and taxation department’s director-general (DG) last Thursday to submit the complete details of all the liquor shops operating across Sindh.
During the case hearing today, Chief Justice Sajjar Ali Shah remarked there are 24 liquor shops for 20,000 minorities in Karachi. He asked under which law these liquor shops were issued licenses.
Is there any quota regarding sale of alcohol during Holi and Diwali festivals, he asked.
The defence lawyer informed the bench that one person is allowed to buy 16 bottles of beer and one alcohol bottle.
Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah remarked that a person could risk his life if he consumes all this in one day.
He directed the concerned authorities to present list of all the liquor stores to Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police and seal all the illegal shops.
Justice Shah also ordered to present license holders in the next hearing.
