Current rain spell may trigger further landslides in upper parts, warns Met Office

A western disturbance is affecting upper and western parts of the country.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Met Office on Saturday warned that more rains may trigger further landslides in Malakand, Hazara divisions, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir during Sunday and Monday.

Rain-thundershower with gusty winds is expected at scattered places in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa areas (Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu divisions), FATA, Quetta, Kalat, Zhob, Sibi, Naseerabad, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala divisions, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.

Rain with dust raising winds is also expected at isolated places in Dera Ghazi Khan, Dera Ismail Khan, Lahore, Sahiwal, Faisalabad and Multan divisions.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has warned that the current rain spell in Malakand Division may cause floods in Swat and Panjkora Rivers.

People have been advised not visit banks of these rivers to avoid human losses.


RELIEF ACTIVITIES IN RAIN-HIT AREAS


Pakistan Army troops have distributed various relief items among the rains victims of Chilas, Barseen and Patan through helicopters.

According to Inter Services Public Relations, the relief items are included including tents, ration packs, medicines and blankets.

Thirty-three tons wheat was also despatched to Gilgit from Rawalpindi.

Overall six hundred troops and ninety-six engineering plants pieces are employed for restoration of infrastructure.

Army troops have cleared 108 slides and restored 473km stretch of Karakoram Highway. Twenty-two slides have been cleared at Gilgit- Skardu road besides restoring 125 km road. Owning to heavy rains KKH and Gilgit-Skardu roads are blocked due to 175 slides at various places.
