Supreme Court suspends IHC order on Lakhvi's release

Lakhvi is one of 7 suspects being tried by Pakistan in connection with the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The Supreme Court on Wednesday nullified the Islamabad High Court‘s (IHC) decision regarding suspension of detention order of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in the Mumbai attacks case, Dunya News reported.
A two-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja heard the federal government’s plea against IHC‘s verdict.
During case proceedings, Justice Jawad S Kawaja said apparently the high court took decision regarding suspension of detention order in ‘haste’. The federal government did not even get a chance to present its stance in the case and facts from both sides were not brought into consideration.
Suspending the high court s order, the bench referred the case back to the Islamabad High Court.
The apex court declared that the high court should announce its decision after hearing the arguments on merit.
In recent weeks, Pakistani legal authorities tried various mechanisms to keep Lakhvi behind bars, including detaining him under under a public order law which was later suspended by the Islamabad High Court, and arresting him in a kidnapping case.
Lakhvi was granted bail in December by an anti-terror court, with the judge saying there was a lack of evidence of his involvement in 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The Islamabad High Court will now hear the case again on Monday.
