Registration of 895,423 North Waziristan IDPs completed

About 800,000 people have reportedly fled the region for temporary camps in nearby towns.

BANNU (Web Desk) – Registration process of around 0.9 million displaced persons from North Waziristan has been completed, Dunya News reported on Saturday.

According to sources, more than 5,000 families have been registered at IDPs camp at Government Commerce College in Peshawar’s Hayatabad area. The camp established on July 7 has registered 29,516 persons so far. The process would continue till July 14.

On the other hand, 895,423 persons have been registered at IDPs camp in Bannu District.

FATA Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) has registered 73,871 families out of which Rs 350.82 million cash aid has been distributed among 29,857 families.

Those who have fled North Waziristan include 232,438 women and 385,214 children. Meanwhile, Pak Army has established 45 mobile teams to carry out polio and other immunisation campaigns in the camps. Also, free health facilities are being provided at three major hospitals in Bannu.

Three centres have been established to district aid among more than 80,000 affected people in Dera Ismail Khan. Third phase of food district to more than 3,000 families has kicked off. District administration is also distribution non-food items including crockery, water coller, mattress and other goods.

On June 15, the Pak Army began an air offensive against alleged Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) strongholds. The military action was in response to a June 8 attack by militants against Jinnah International Airport in Karachi that killed more than 18 people.

The military then opened a ground offensive on June 30 in North Waziristan involving more than 30,000 troops. The government estimated that as of July 7 the military intervention had displaced almost 800,000 people, and that up to 75 percent of them have taken refuge in Bannu District of the tribal region.
