ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed anti-terrorism court (ATC) to conduct hearing into taxi driver’s killing case and decide the case within 30 days.

Chief Justice heard the suo moto case of a taxi driver’s killing by Rangers today (Friday).

During case proceedings, the CJP said that negligence was committed in this incident, similar to the murder of Karachi’s Sarfaraz Shah who was also killed by the Rangers at point-blank.

Attorney General Munir A Malik informed the apex court that the widow of the taxi driver was given a house worth Rs1.8 million.

The Chief Justice expressed resentment over the FIR being lodged on the complaint of the widow of the taxi driver, adding that the foundation of the case was not correct and if the case was ruined, the police officer who registered the FIR would be held responsible.

The apex court ordered that required sections should also be included in the FIR and no negligence will be tolerated in the investigation process.

On July 9, the taxi driver identified as Murid Abbas was shot dead in Karachi s Gulistan-i-Jauhar locality when he allegedly failed to stop his vehicle upon being signaled to do so by Rangers personnel.

Reports said the driver was killed on the spot, in front of his son who he had reportedly been driving to hospital.

Four Rangers officials are in police custody in connection with the extra-judicial case. Ghulam Rasool, is the main accused in the incident.

On July 18, the officials were remanded in to police custody till July 22, however was extended till July 25 for further investigation.

Rangers troops patrol Karachi and its surroundings to combat routine ethnic, political and extremist violence in the city. Human rights activists complain that the Rangers force, established for combat and border duty, is neither equipped nor trained for civilian areas.
