Govt working on multi-pronged strategy to tackle energy crisis: PM

SHANGHAIR (Web Desk) - Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that government is working on a multi-pronged strategy to overcome the shortage of electricity in the country.

 

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Shanghai from Beijing today (Saturday) to attend energy conference and meet other Chinese leaders.

 

In an interview with China Central Television‚ he said the country would be utilizing coal‚ hydel and alternative sources to generate power.

 

Nawaz Sharif said he has also discussed cooperation with Chinese leaders in infrastructure development especially construction of metro system in Karachi‚ Lahore and Islamabad.

 

He said we will try to start these projects as soon as possible as there is a dire need to solve the transportation problems of the people of big cities like Karachi. 

 

The prime minister, who chose China for his first foreign tour after assuming office, is accompanied by a high-level delegation including the chief ministers of Punjab and Balochistan provinces besides the minister for water and power and others.

 

Nawaz Sharif began 5-day official visit to China in hopes of securing infrastructure projects to help tackle Pakistan s economic and energy problems.

 

Earlier on Thursday, PM Nawaz met President Xi Jinping , and Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing. He also met financial and corporate leaders, and visited major industrial centres during his trip.

 

The visit is the second high-level meeting between the two nations since May, when Chinese premier Li Keqiang visited Pakistan.
