SWaziristan operation: UN says 0.17 mn families to be displaced
The United Nations said Saturday that upto 0.17 million families could be displaced due to military operation in South Waziristan and urged the government to ensure security of the residents. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Coordinator of UN Martin Mogunja said 75000 people displaced from South Waziristan had been registered. The UN had appealed to pledge 680 million US dollars, so far 480 million dollars have been received, another appeal will be made to the international community if more operations conducted, he added. Regional Director UNICEF Daniel Toli told that 25 percent of the population in Swat could not be reached making relief activities difficult.
