Local Bodies system term not extended: Farhatullah Babar

Dunya News

Attorney General of Pakistan Latif Khosa said that the president has prolonged the tenure of nazims till December 31. Talking to media in Sindh High Court, Attorney General Latif Khosa said this step was taken by the president that allies would make any decision about the local body system. He said that only disputed clauses of the 17th amendment would be repealed; 17th amendment would not be abolished completely because it will affect the federal and provincial assemblies. The Constitutional Reforms Committee was constituted for ending only the disputed clauses in the 17th amendment. On the other hand, nazim Karachi Mustafa Kamal said that his demand was not to extend the term but not to end the system. He said that he did not want to be a nazim again but elections would be held on time. He did not receive any official announcement regarding the extension of nazims tenure, Mustafa Kamal said. Nazim Rawalpindi was also agreed with Kamals statement. However, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Baber has denied the news that President Asif Ali Zardari has extended the term of local bodies by the year end. Baber said that no such decision was taken by the President.
