(Web Desk) - A Lahore local court has released stage actor and dancer Samar Rana from a case involving allegations of torture and sexual assault of a 14-year-old domestic worker.
Samar Rana was produced before the court by Nawab Town Investigation Police, where Judicial Magistrate Zaib Shehzad Cheema heard the case and ordered her immediate release.
The court directed action against the investigating officer for failing to present the accused within 24 hours of arrest.
The magistrate further remarked that police requests for physical remand cannot be granted mechanically or unnecessarily.
After reviewing the record, the court noted that no evidence was found against Samar Rana. On the basis of insufficient proof, she was formally discharged from the case.
It is worth noting that on August 25, Samar Rana was arrested on charges of assault, exploitation, and alleged facilitation in the gang rape of the 14-year-old maid.
Police had earlier stated that the victim claimed she was raped by five unidentified men at the actress’s residence and subjected to physical violence by Samar Rana herself. A case was registered by Nawab Town Police, leading to her detention before the court’s ruling.
