(Web Desk) - Bhutan is preparing to host its first-ever fashion week from October 27 to November 1, marking a significant milestone for the country’s growing creative industry.
The event, organized by the Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property in collaboration with the Royal Textile Academy, will highlight Bhutan’s rich textile traditions, contemporary designs, and sustainable fashion practices.
According to the official website, Bhutan Fashion Week aims to bring together local artisans, designers, and craftspeople - from handloom weavers to sketch artists and needle workers - while also welcoming international names and brands that have shaped global fashion.
So far, 11 designers have been announced, though the complete schedule is yet to be released.
Explaining the choice of October, organizers said autumn’s transformation and earthy colors provide the perfect backdrop for the event. They also expressed hopes of making the fashion week an annual affair.
Show director Kelly Dorji shared that the event will take audiences on a journey through Bhutan’s past, present, and future of fashion, offering designers a global platform to showcase and market their creativity.
The website emphasized Bhutan’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, noting that the fashion showcased will reflect eco-conscious practices.
“This is one small step for Bhutan but a giant leap for our modest fashion industry,” it stated, expressing aspirations to one day stand alongside the world’s “big four” fashion weeks.
